Reading in Year 2



By October half term in Year 2 most children have moved off the Read, Write, Inc (RWInc) Phonics scheme and are taught 4 explicit RWInc comprehension lessons which develop children’s skills in answering written questions about a range of texts. We also use this as an opportunity to use dictionaries and discuss the meaning of new words, building on vocabulary.

Once a week the children also have a focussed group reading session which supports comprehension skills and teacher assessment.


We practise the Year 2 Common Exception Words and for some children recap the Year 1 words.


The children are heard read individually by their class teacher, TA’s and volunteers within the school.



Reading Diaries:


When a child is read with, it can be written in their reading diary, by any adult in school or at home. This is a useful way to communicate what each child is working on next and what they are doing really well with in terms of Reading. It also gives the children an opportunity to track their own progress and reflect on the books they have read so far.



Reading Bands:


  • Our book band system is progressive, starting in Reception with the early stage Dandelion books through to Grey banded books and becoming a free reader at the end of KS1.

  • Our ‘colour banded books’ are the books that the children take home to practice their reading skills and support the reading stage a child is working at.

  • We use a range of reading scheme books which include ‘Big Cat’, Oxford reading book and a range of other schemes.

  • In the early stages the books are phonic based and in line with the schools RWInc. Phonic scheme.













Classroom Reading Corners:



We make sure our classroom reading corners are also full of exciting texts for the children to access. We are very proud of our library which is constantly being updated with the newest, most shiny books for our children to enjoy.
